Special attention is given to the works of strategic thinkers like Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Napoleon, Jomini, and Clausewitz, as well as the ideas of figures such as Mao, Gandhi, Mahathir, and Lee Kuan Yew. The course examines these concepts in the context of their application to leadership and management in modern nation-states, markets, and organizations.

DN241 GFPP5034 KUMP A THE EVOLUTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF STRATEGIC STUDIES

This is a core course for students reading for the M.Sc. in Strategic Studies. It is designed as an introductory course on the sub-discipline of Strategic Studies which began to develop in the post-1945 period as a result of the birth of the atom bomb and the onset of the Cold War. Strategic Studies evolved and developed as Cold War rivalries rose and declined. The end of the Cold War brought new strategic agendas and realities. The students will, therefore, be exposed to these stages in the development of Strategic Studies as well as the new strategic concepts that emerged during the period such as Nuclear Deterrence, Arms Control, and Peacekeeping.
