This course aims at exposing the students to certain aspects and characteristics of leadership as practiced in certain organizations. This involves the micro organizations as represented by the political parties, governmental organizations and states as well as macro organizations, for instance, the regional bodies and cooperations such as non-governmental organizations and other international movements. In consequent thereof, certain leadership models, approaches and theories would be used order to examine how these leadership approaches are adopted in the management of such organizations.

This is one of the minor courses for BIAM students. It is designed to examine the concept of ethnicity, ethnic groups, nationalism and modern nation-state building to understand the nature and causes of ethnic conflicts in the contemporary world. The course analyses the above mentioned concepts and issues from the anthropological and historical point of view. Students in this course are exposed to identity politics, and issues of modern nation-state building. The course examines various ethnic conflicts in the world, and the diversity of cases from different regions gives the students a sense of the scope of the problems of ethnic conflicts.

This course will concentrate on one of the important issues and structures of international political economy namely the international trade. In general the course will focus on the dynamic relationship between government (politics) and market (trade) particularly the rational and the way the former affecting the later. The first part of the course will introduce students to key concepts in politics and economy and will expose them to the dynamic rational for nations (politics) to interfere in the international trade. The second part of the course will highlight some of the main theories of international trade in order to answer four basic questions of international trade which are the reason for nations to trade, the way trade flows, the rationale behind free trade and the justification for government interference. The third part of the course will examine basic economic concepts to see how international and domestic economies are related. This includes an examination of national balance of payment, the exchange rates and the inflation rates and how altogether they affect the national economic growth. Students will also be introduced to an analysis of two government policies namely the monetary and the fiscal policies to understand the tools of economic management by the central government that define the basic features of domestic political economy. Finally, students will be examining several international trade issues and possibly link them to the theories learnt.

The course will expose the students to the various dynamics, processes and factors that influence United States Foreign Policy formulation and its linkage to domestic and international policies. The focus will be on US post-Cold War policies and its role as the worlds remaining sole super power. We will examine the interplay between the formal and informal institutions, political and economic interests, ideologies and political beliefs, and collective and group identities in the formation and implementation of US foreign policy. The course will also incorporate the study of selected case studies to enable students to develop practical knowledge of pressing US foreign policy challenges and issues such as terrorism, blow back, pre-emptive war, unilateralism and so forth.

This course is part of the BIAMs core courses. It re-visits significant concepts and theories in international relations and diplomacy in the context of current international environment. The aim is to examine and assess the causes, impacts, limitations and the prospect of resolutions of various international issues and diplomacy against this background. As it is a seminar module, the course relies primarily on discussions to facilitate the learning process and to provide a better understanding of those issues. Where appropriate, it will take advantage of the occasional public lectures by invited speakers to UUM whose talk is relevant to the seminar topic so that students can benefit from the expertise and experience of such speakers.

This paper is one of the courses for students in the International Affairs Management undergraduate programme. This course provides a platform for students to understand the complexity between sovereignty and globalization and the inevitable relationship between them. It complements the Diplomacy and International Relations package of the BIAM programme. This course introduces basic concepts of both sovereignty and globalization. It discusses globalization and analyzes its political, economic and socio-cultural challenges towards the principle of sovereignty.

This course is designed to help build an understanding of a variety of conflict situations among students in a way that they can relate to them through their academic experiences. Its an interdisciplinary course that draws its insights from various branches of social sciences and seeks to provide a lively learning environment for teaching and training students. Conflict exists in all aspects of human existence whether between individuals or at the state or international levels. Conflict has both positive and negative implications. Conflicts may lead to revolutions and positive changes and it may develop relationships and improve communications as well as contributing towards settling disputes. The negative feature of conflicts is that it leads to violence, wars and destruction. Thus the need to manage conflict is an essential requirement of human existence. This course aims to create awareness about the nature of conflicts as well as inculcate the need to resolve conflicts at all levels through different means of conflict resolutions. The course will deal with the theories of conflicts, its causes and means of resolving conflict at local, regional and international levels.

Students undertaking practicum in International Affairs Management Program will be placed in an organization (employer) which analyses, formulates or implements policy in relation to political and socio-economic affairs at domestic or international level. The range of employer relevant to practicum is broad: from government departments, non-government organizations (including political party), international government and non-government organizations, multinational corporations, academic and analytical think tanks to even practicum under individual politicians. Students will be supervised and guided by supervisors within the program of study and also from within the organizations. Students will carry out analytical exercises of relevance to the organisations political and socio-economic affairs-related work. Students are expected to learn a great deal of knowledge pertaining to organizational management by engaging in the job tasks and responsibilities given by the employer. Students completing this course should expect to acquire significant insight into the complexities of political and socio-economic affairs and associated policy making and management activities.
