This course gives a holistic view of how a commercial bank is organized, managed and operated. Beginning with the roles and functions of a commercial bank and the regulatory environment in which it operates, students will then learn legal issues that underline the banker-customer relationship. Students can expect to gain a solid understanding on various products and services such as deposits, bill of exchange, cheques, remittances, trade finance and different kinds of banking services. Selective discussion on a few operating units of a commercial bank is included to demonstrate how their interplays are critical for efficient and profitable delivery of banking products, services and facilities. Concluding topics on current banking practices and current issues and challenges affecting banking industry would further enhance understanding on the realities of a commercial bank operations.

This course will discuss the financial institutions' roles as a financial intermediary in providing loan services. The students will be exposed to the basic concepts, principles, and loan policies in bank management. This course will also cover other topics such as loan pricing, lending process, loan products and computation of loan repayments, analysis of risks using qualitative and quantitative analysis, security for loans, restructuring of loans, lending rationale, loan agreement, managing problem loans, and others. Besides that, current issues on the lending; conventional and Islamic financing, will also be discussed.

This course exposes students to all types of banking securities used as collaterals in lending activities of banking and financial institutions, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages as well as their suitability as collaterals. Students will learn how a perfect security is created and how bankers rights under each type of securities is enforced in recovery of debts. Discussion also covers relevant topics including National Land Administration System, Legal/Judiciary System having jurisdiction over banking securities in Malaysia, Registration of Company Act, and actual court cases in Malaysia to facilitate understanding and to generate extensive knowledge regarding banking securities.

The course focuses on the importance of marketing in financial institutions and the marketing techniques and tools that can be applied in the financial institutions for competitive advantage. This course will also cover topics such as basic marketing concept, bank marketing strategies, bank products, consumer behavior and attitudes, market segmentation and others. The emphasis is on the practical application of principles, concepts and tools of marketing management.

This course gives students an insight into the theory, concept and practice of international trade, and critically examines the mechanics of various modes of trade settlement. Special focus will be on documentary collection and documentary credits, an area of knowledge much sought-after by bankers, executives, lawyers, exporters and importers. Students will also explore various Islamic and conventional trade finance facilities available for financing international trade and how these facilities are utilized. Analytical study on relevant topics in foreign exchange will serve to enrich students knowledge of the course. The use of case studies will make class-room learning practical and enjoyable.

This course allows students to integrate and apply the principles, concepts, theories and practices of banking through analysis of real-world case studies and discussion of current issues on banking. Students also will have the opportunities to incorporate knowledge on disciplines such as economics, finance, insurance and management in solving problems and making decisions as prelude to starting career in banking and financial industry.

The purpose of this course is to provide exposure to the students regarding the actual working environment by placing them to work in real organizations. In addition, the course enables the student to apply concepts and theories learnt in university into actual practices in areas related to banking and finance activities. Students are exposed to the aspects of working in a team work environment, soft and hard skills development, and understanding of an organization culture. Students are also required to involve directly in executing the tasks assigned by the organization apart from accomplishing a practicum report in accordance with the guidelines determined by the College of Business.
