The course aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of the diverse research methods used in the Social Sciences in general, and in management in particular. It also aims at sharing the required skills for choosing and implementing those methods. The respective uses and usefulness of the main research methods will be discussed, as well as and their relevance for the study of contemporary Social Science and management research issues. Research methods with emphasis on the nature of research, problem identification and formulation, methods of observation and data collection, analysis and interpretation, research communications, and project development.

The course is designed for students studying management for the first time. It introduces the student to a range of topics which are useful in understanding the principles of management and the role of business managers in achieving business organisational goal. The topic covers include business organisational goals, dynamics of business environment, management theories, management tasks and the functional areas of management, values and business ethics, as well as sustainability. The focus of the discussion will be on the roles and responsibilities of business managers as well as the challenges of ethically managing the businesses in the complex and dynamic business environment. The ultimate aim of the course is to help students to recognise the dynamics of business environments and how the business managers consider these dynamic environments in designing strategies that will ensure business survival and success while at the same time ensuring social and environmental sustainability.

This course concentrates on financial theories and practices of the conventional Islamic financial markets, instruments, and institutions. Students will be guided to explore the main concepts underpinning both types of financial system. The course also addresses the evolution of conventional Islamic financial institutions and markets both locally and globally as well as their future prospects.

This course is designed for communication and journalism students who plan their careers in the media industries. It studies the media institutions and the power associated with them in relishing freedom of expression. Special attention is given to the ethics and laws governing the main media industries including the print media, broadcasting, motion pictures/ films, and advertising. The discussion evolves around the media development, and issues of external and internal controls surrounding the practices. Inclusive to that, other issues/cases related to laws and ethics in public relations and management are also being taken into account. The competitive pressures combined with technological convergence contributing to a more challenging ethical decision-making and analysis for todays media industries. Owners, managers and employees of modern media companies look to ethical principles and fairness to re-establish faith with consumers. Realising that, the course also guides students to make an ethical decision in an urgent situation.

This graduate-level course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to conduct an educational research scientifically. In particular, this course emphasizes on research design, strategies, methods, and process of conducting research. Additionally, it will cover the essential steps in planning a research project such as problem identification and formulation of the research question, developing the objective of the study, reviewing related literature, and formulating research framework. Apart from that, methods for data collection, data analyses for both quantitative and qualitative approaches will be discussed. It will devote considerable time to the research proposal and final report of the research.

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the legal aspects pertaining to educational management particularly in Malaysia. Students are required to analyze certain provisions under the Education Act 1996, discuss selected rules; regulations and the penalties adhered to the provision of the education act and regulations It focuses on the rules, procedures and the legal aspects in relation to conduct and discipline at school management. Issues related to law of tort and negligence of teachers would be discussed based on court cases and current issues. The law of natural justice and procedure to take action on students discipline will also be discussed based on Malaysian education regulations and court cases. Students are required to propose action plan to implement the safe school concept and legal risk management at school to avoid teachers from being sued in court. Students are also required to understand and analyze teachers code of ethic and provision in the Public Service (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations, 1993 (Amendment 2002) in order to be a highly professional and ethical teacher.

The course will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop and carry out a research. In particular, Online Journalism Research aims at teaching students on how it happens and then equips the students with expert tips on analyzing the online media encounter in journalist daily life. Reflecting the latest developments from the field, this course delivers a comprehensive overview of online journalism research and a thorough exploration of each major approach including qualitative research, content analysis, survey research, and experimental research. It also fully integrates social media coverage, and the impact of merging technology. Additionally, methods for data collection and analysis are included. The course also discusses the preparations involved in writing a research report.

This course is a continuation of the Research Methods course where students will conduct their research, in which students have to explore and apply the suitable methodology in order to solve the real problem. To support the students while implementing one of the research processes (i.e. analysing data), a seminar and 2 days of workshops will be conducted intending to expose students to Data mining Using SAS Enterprise Miner. At the end of this course, students are required to construct a research report.

This course seeks to provide students with both conceptual framework and practical experience in planning and analyzing policy. It is designed to helps students to develop the skills required to define and critically analyze policy issues and problems, choose the relevant methods and techniques for policy analysis, evaluate alternative policy solutions and assess the means and cost of implementation. Focus of discussion is on the important considerations in the process of policy analysis such as indentifying data sources, establishing criteria for analyzing policies, assessing and choosing policy alternatives and monitoring policy implementation.
