DC232 SSWA5023 KUMP KL ADVANCE SOCIAL WORK THEORY & PRACTICE

This course provides the first year MSW students with the knowledge and skills needed for generalist social work practice with individual, families, and groups. It will also help students to comprehend how advanced social work theories can be used in understanding clients problems and situational context. Basic content on working with client using social work approaches (casework, group work and community work) are also presented. It is taken concurrently with a field placement, which serves as a practice lab for applying theory and skills learned in the classroom based on values and principles of social work. The course teaches students how to use the decision tree to navigate different client system sizes, methods, and theories to arrive at treatment decisions reflective of best practices in both direct and indirect practices. Anchored to the decision tree, the course is designed to increase competency in generalist practice by providing students with a guide to theory and evidence-based decision-making at each step of the hierarchy.
