A231 SBLB2013 KUMP B INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLINGUISTICS

This course provides an understanding of Sociolinguistics, a discipline concerned with the investigation of language in the context of the social world. Broadly, sociolinguistics examines the issues related to understanding language within social situations and contexts in which language is used. Topics covered in the course will include language variation and change, language use in various contexts such as business management, social identity and language use, language adaptation, linguistic diversity, intercultural communication, language ideologies and methods of enquiry in sociolinguistics. Throughout the course, students will be given opportunities to consider how the basic ideas in sociolinguistics can inform other academic disciplines and public discourse. Besides presentations and discussions, students will be exposed to new developments in the field such as communication through social media. Students will also be exposed to different cultures, life experiences, and worldviews different from their own to embrace Diversity/Global Learning (DGL).
